I have the opportunity to get a ‘73 Dodge Dart with a Slant 6 for next to nothing in pretty decent shape. However, if I were to buy it, the ‘71 Bus would go into storage due to garage space, limiting how often I can drive it. I am torn between what to do and want to get some other opinions. I love the Bus, but it isn’t my car, so I can’t make any decisions as to what is done to it. With the Dart, I could do whatever I want to it and it would be an amazing project car. I have no idea what to do and any comments would be great.

I’m gonna have to say get the Dart. It’s a cool car that will make for a fun project and it would be yours to do with as you please.

Do you really want the dart? Or do you just want it because it’s cheap? If you really want a dart, then go for it. If you don’t really want a dart, then chances are whatever you really wanted is going to show up the second after you get the dart.

I’ve been looking at A-Bodies for the past year or so.

I’m into Mopar and VWs don’t really do it for me, so I’m biased. But if you’re interested in doing a mild drivetrain swap (a period V8 that would “drop in” and maybe a transmission swap if it’s an auto) that could be fun! I’ve always liked the way darts look. I guess it depends on how much use you’d get out of the dodge vs. how often you drive the bus, right?

My plan for the Dart would be either 318 or a 340 if I could afford it and an A833, although it will be a while before funds are available to do anything major like that. I would probably drive the Dart more often, just because I wouldn’t always be worried about the fact that it isn’t my car.

You’ve said two key things about the Dart:
- I would drive it more
- I could do what I want with it
Those right there are the reasons you should get the Dart.

Since the bus isn't yours... get the Dart. Plus for day to day use I think, would never have thought this would cross my mind, the Dart will be more practical.

I’d say do it. Solid darts for cheap are hard to come by. But only if you like the car and will enjoy putting the time and money into it. I bought a 64 Barracuda a couple years ago because it was cheap and solid. I wanted to fall in love with it, make it a nice retro circle track car, but I just couldn’t get into it. As a result my other project suffered and eventually I had to scrap it off. I regret it now and have long since sold off the Barracuda to an owner who absolutely loved it and wanted to put the money into it.
